Are you a millionaire? If so, congratulations and you don’t really need to read any further.

But for those of us that aren’t millionaires (yet) and are considering college, an important component to study is how to finance your education. The price of a college education has been a topic of concern for many years. Exploring your financial aid options can be a critical part of your education and will play a part in meeting your financial obligations during your college education.

Before beginning your education or before signing an agreement, it’s always best to understand what you’re about to sign. You will need to understand the obligations and requirements to continue receiving FA (Financial Aid) and the different typed of FA available to you. LIBI offers two types of FA and there is also a loan option to help finance your education if necessary.

At LIBI, we explain this process and the responsibilities that come with it.

Below are a list of the most common questions that we feel you should be most familiar with concerning financial aid:

Q: Does everybody qualify for FA?

A: No. International students and those with a high income do not qualify for FA.

Q: What documents do I need to bring?
A: You need:

US Citizens/Residents: Social Security Card, NYS ID, US passport/green card, current year tax return and birth certificate.

Refugees or asylees: Social Security Card, NYS ID, Passport, current year tax return, birth certificate, 1-94, court letter, and A-05.

Q: How much FA will I get?

A: The amount of aid you will receive depends on your income.

Q: What is the difference between being a dependent and an independent?

A: Independent students: older than 24 years old.

Dependent students: 24 years old or younger.

However, if you are younger than 24 years old and you are married, you could be considered as independent for PELL only.

Q: What kind of FA do you offer at LIBI?

A: LIBI offers PELL (federal grant) and TAP (New York State grant).

Q: If I don’t qualify for FA, what options do I have?

A: If you have a high income or you are an international student, you may not qualify for FA. LIBI offers many scholarships for those who are high school graduates and obtain a 3.0 or higher GPA during their first semester at LIBI. Students who meet all the requirements are welcomed to apply for a scholarship for their second semester.

Q: How often do I have to apply for FA?

A: If you are receiving FA, you should visit a FA specialist before every new semester. (every 4 months) You may not have to bring all the initial paperwork every time you visit; however, the FA specialist will have to renew your aid request and prove that you are still a current student. Not following proper procedure, risks your chances of keep receiving FA.

Q: What is the difference between a loan and a grant?

A: If put in simple words, a grant is free money from the government, but only to good standing students. A loan is borrowed money, which you will have to pay back with interest. Loans may look like “free” money when received, but will most likely be a financial responsibility after completing your degree.

Q: Do I have to apply for FA with my parent’s information?

A: If you are 24 years old of younger (dependent), yes. However, there are some exceptions, so depending on your specific case, the FA advisor will do his/her best to get you the most FA you can possibly get.

Q: I have a student visa, can I apply for FA?

A: No. International students do not qualify for FA. However, if you are a high school graduate and obtain a 3.0 or higher GPA on your first semester at LIBI, you can apply for a scholarship for your second semester.

While these are questions that we feel are important, you should ask your FA advisor any questions that you feel are important. FA might be your best tool to finance your education, so use it wisely, understand it thoroughly and it will benefit you fully!
