Four days after Radio RAMPA published a report highlighting the neglected condition of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko Square in Greenpoint, the first signs of cleanup efforts are now visible.
The office of New York City Council Member Lincoln Restler informed Radio RAMPA today – July 14 – that it had been in contact with the New York City Department of Parks. According to the statement provided to Radio RAMPA, “in response, they [NYC Parks] have been sending several crews to the Square each day to address the situation.”
Radio RAMPA returned to the Square today with a camera and observed several improvements. A large pile of trash bags that had been left near the entrance to the Square has been removed, graffiti has been cleaned from both signs identifying the Square on the Nassau Avenue side, weeds have been cleared from the center of the park, and litter has been removed from behind the Father Jerzy Popiełuszko monument and from the benches surrounding it.
These are the first steps toward the improvements the Square needs. However, there are still areas that require additional cleanup and maintenance, and we hope these efforts will continue in the days ahead.
Several days ago, after receiving concerns from members of the Polish-American community, Radio RAMPA published a report documenting the poor condition of the Square. The report highlighted accumulated trash, overgrown walkways, unpleasant odors, and vegetation that had obstructed the view of one of the monuments.
